Six Little Skirts

img_skirtsblog0001

This was a happy project at our house the other day.  Wednesdays at my house is crafty club with six, sometimes seven girls.  This skirt is from the ever-creative designer liesl from Oliver + S patterns.  She has generously provided this free pattern. Uninterrupted, you can make this skirt in about a half hour. Having gone fabric shopping the previous week, the girls were so eager to sew their skirts. One by one, they sat on my lap, and I took charge of the foot pedal, and they did most of the rest of the work. It was magical. They were quiet, serious and set on doing their work. They pushed the elastic through the casing, they turned the hem, they pressed the seams open. Afterward, they all lined up for this picture. The pride they felt was so evident. I sent them home twirling and happy.

Birdie Bag

img_birdiebag0001

I heart this fabric.  I’ve been selfishly hoarding meaning to make something with it for ages.  Suzannah asked for a bookbag, and a few hours later….presto!  I love being able to do that for her.  I might have to use it sometimes for myself though…

Dare to be Square

img_swellquilt0001

I really love this method.  These are improvisational squares, chain-pieced together.  I don’t know if these squares qualify as wonky, or if they are more in the ‘what a bunch of squares’ type of square.  Either way, I’m having a whole lot of fun making each one.  I have quite a bit of this fabric and I’m going to see how large of a quilt I can make.  I am going to make it square, rather than rectangular because I think the squares in a square quilt will look really good.  I love the jade color.

In quilting bee news, I hear that the first set of fabrics is on its way to me!  I can’t wait to see them all and to send them out to our group of quilters.

Sunday Stash

I’m not even sure what to make with this set of fabrics…but I saw the chickens and had to scoop these up.  A friend with a red and black vintage kitchen with bakelite, jadeite and fiesta dishes  might be needing a tablecloth.

A Good Bowl of Soup

img_soup0001

This is our family’s favorite soup, a very garlicky Italian Wedding Soup.  This really is a meal in a bowl, along with a whole lot of warming comfort.

This recipe makes enough to feed 8.

Italian Wedding Soup

For the meatballs:

1 lb. lean ground beef or turkey, or a combination of both

1/4 C. bread crumbs

1 egg

1 Tbsp. Worcetershire sauce

1 clove garlic, minced fine

salt and pepper to taste

In a medium mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and combine thoroughly.  Shape into meatballs as small as you can.  ( I use a very small ice cream scooper that is meant specifically for truffle-making.)

In a large pot,  on medium heat 2 tbsp. olive oil.  Lightly brown the meatballs, about 5 minutes.  When all sides are brown, add:

3 cartons (26 oz.) Beef Stock (I used Swanson’s stock, not broth)

1 slivered garlic clove

4-5 handfuls of baby spinach

2 cups *cooked* small pasta such as pastina, orzo or acini di pepe

Taste, and adjust seasonings if necessary and serve steaming hot, garnished with a little parmesan cheese.

Soup’s on…

Two Sisters Under One Quilt

The Candy Bar Road quilt is in the house and on the couch. Straight out of the dryer, these two got in on the scene

Here’s the front:

and here’s the back:

The back is pieced with long, wide strips.  It came out very crinkly, which is all you could ever ask for.  I’m very happy with this quilt.  Also, my corners are my best to date.

And now for something completely different, I’m going to tackle triangles.  Just because.

Thoughts on a Virtual Quilting Bee

cottagequiltingbeebutton

Edited to add that we have enough quilters for this bee. Thank you for your interest!!

Would anyone out there be interested in doing a virtual quilting bee based on this one from mamaurchin? I think it would be a wonderful way to connect and share our talent and friendship. If you are interested, please go to the link above and read all the details, but hese are the basic guidelines:

Each month one of the members (that month’s designer) sends me the fabric(s) for their quilt. The designer should send enough fabric for all twelve blocks and an idea or patern for the blocks. I then distribute the fabrics into envelopes and send them on to the other members, keeping one set of fabric for myself. Members then have until the end of the month to create a block that fits in the design idea of the designing member for that month and send it back to me. I gather all 11 blocks together and send them to the designing member. Beginning to get the idea? I absolutely love the idea.

Please leave a comment if you would like to join and are able to commit to this process. One block a month shouldn’t be too much to add to our own projects…right?? If I get 12 people interested right away, we could start in February. What a good way to start the year.
